Tips for using automotive turbochargers

Turbocharged engines have many advantages. For the same engine, after installing a turbocharger, the maximum power can be increased about 40%, and the fuel consumption is also lower than that of a naturally aspirated engine with the same power. However, in terms of use, maintenance and care, turbocharged engines are more delicate. If they are not used and maintained correctly, the service life of the turbine will be reduced and the engine will be damaged.

After the engine is started, the turbine cannot be immediately involved to drive at high speed, because the turbocharger can only show its power when it is running at high speed, so the high-speed operation of the turbocharger also requires good oil lubrication protection. When the car is just started, the various indexes of the oil have not reached the protection stage, and its flow rate is not as fast as at the working temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to wait until the oil temperature rises to the normal working temperature before letting the engine run at high speed to play the role of turbocharging.

When driving at high speed, the temperature of the turbocharger and related components will be very high. After the engine is turned off, the turbine is still running due to inertia, and it still needs oil to continue to lubricate and protect it, but the engine is turned off, causing the oil pressure to drop rapidly to zero, and the oil lubrication will be interrupted. At the same time, the heat inside the supercharger cannot be taken away by the oil, which will reduce the quality of the oil, damage the turbocharger and damage the bearings. Therefore, before turning off the engine, you should idle for about three minutes or let the car run slowly for a while after turning off the engine, control the speed below the turbocharger range, and reduce the temperature of the turbocharger. Of course, many models of turbochargers now use water cooling devices. When the engine suddenly turns off, the water cooler can still continue to play a role in gradually cooling the turbocharger.

The operating temperature of the turbocharger is as high as 900℃-1000℃. Under full load working conditions, its speed can reach 180,000 to 200,000 revolutions per minute, and the working environment is harsh. Many problems with turbochargers are caused by too long oil replacement cycles or the use of inferior oil, which causes the floating turbine main shaft to lack lubrication and heat dissipation, thereby damaging the oil seal, causing oil leakage, and burning oil. The high-speed operation of the turbocharger and the engine requires the engine oil to have strong shear resistance. Therefore, when choosing engine oil, high-grade fully synthetic engine oil should be selected. Ordinary mineral oil is not suitable for turbocharged engines.
