The History of Turbochargers

The history of turbochargers dates back to the early days of internal combustion engines. In the late 19th century, engineers like Gottlieb Daimler and Rudolf Diesel explored the concept of compressing intake air to boost engine power and enhance fuel efficiency. However, it wasn’t until 1925 that Swiss engineer Alfred Bchi made a breakthrough by creating the first turbo unit that utilized exhaust gas, achieving a remarkable 40% power increase. This innovation marked the official introduction of turbochargers to the automotive industry.

Initially, turbochargers were mainly employed in large engines, such as marine and touring engines. In 1938, Swiss Machine Works Saurer produced the first turbocharged engine for trucks, expanding its application.

The turbocharger made its debut in passenger cars with the launch of the Chevrolet Corvair Monza and Oldsmobile Jetfire in the early 1960s. Despite their impressive power output, these early turbochargers suffered from reliability issues, resulting in their swift exit from the market.

Following the 1973 oil crisis, turbochargers gained more traction as a means to improve fuel efficiency. As emission regulations became stricter, turbochargers became prevalent in truck engines, and today, all truck engines are equipped with turbochargers.

In the 1970s, turbochargers made a significant impact in motorsports and Formula 1, popularizing their use in passenger cars. However, the term “turbo-lag,” referring to the delayed response of the turbo unit, posed challenges and led to some customer dissatisfaction.

A pivotal moment came in 1978 when Mercedes-Benz introduced a turbocharged diesel engine, followed by the VW Golf Turbodiesel in 1981. These innovations substantially improved engine efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Today, turbochargers are not only valued for their performance-enhancing capabilities but also for their contribution to fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions. In essence, turbochargers work by harnessing exhaust gas to minimize fuel consumption and environmental impact.
