What does water-cooling really do? Water-cooling improves mechanical durability and lengthens the turbocharger’s life. Many turbochargers are designed without water cooling ports and are sufficiently cooled by air and the lubricating oil that flows through them.Like any engine component, turbos need a form of cooling to prevent them from overheating. Air and oil that flows through them cools some turbochargers, but others need water-cooling to function.
The process of a liquid cooled turbocharger can be orchestrated in two ways. During normal engine operation coolant flows through the turbocharger via the mechanical water pump. However, thermal siphoning can pull some coolant through the turbo’s centre housing or it can be pumped through properly routed coolant lines.
Drive your car gently for the last minute or two of the drive to protect the engine, or let the car idle afterwards for at least 60 seconds. By letting it run. the oil will continue to circulate and cool down the turbo. When the engine is running, the oil is a coolant that draws heat out of the turbocharger. But, for the oil to cool the turbo, it must flow. Restrictions in the oil feed or return lines can cause the turbocharger to operate hotter than normal.
The turbocharger bearing system is lubricated by oil from the engine. The oil is fed under pressure into the bearing housing, through to the journal bearings and thrust system. The oil also acts as a coolant taking away heat generated by the turbine. The journal bearings are a free-floating rotational type.

Many turbochargers are designed without water cooling ports and are sufficiently cooled by air and the lubricating oil that flows through them.Turbocharged engines do need to cool down before they are turned off. But in nearly all driving conditions, the engine does not reach temperatures that require a deliberate cooling down period.
