Since the turbocharger is installed on the exhaust side of the engine, the working temperature of the turbocharger is very high, and the rotor speed of the turbocharger is very high when it is working, which can reach more than 100,000 revolutions per minute. Such high speed and temperature make the common needle roller or ball bearings unable to work properly. Therefore, the turbocharger generally adopts full Journal bearings, which are lubricated and cooled by engine oil. Therefore, according to this structural principle, some problems should be paid attention to when using this engine:
1) The turbocharger must be lubricated in advance when the downtime is too long or in winter, and when the turbocharger is replaced.
2) After the engine is started, it should be idle for 3 to 5 minutes to allow the lubricating oil to reach a certain working temperature and pressure, so as to avoid accelerated wear or even jamming due to lack of oil in the bearing when the load is suddenly increased.
3) Do not turn off the engine immediately when the vehicle is parked, but run it at idle for 3 to 5 minutes to gradually reduce the temperature and speed of the turbocharger rotor. Immediately turning off the engine will cause the oil to lose pressure, and the rotor will be damaged by inertia and will not be lubricated.
4) Check the oil level regularly to avoid bearing failure and rotating parts jamming due to lack of oil.
5) Replace the oil and filter regularly. Since the full floating bearing has high requirements for lubricating oil, the manufacturer’s specified brand of oil should be used.
6) Clean and replace the air filter regularly. A dirty air filter will increase the intake resistance and reduce the engine power.
7) Check the air tightness of the intake system regularly. Leakage will cause dust to be sucked into the turbocharger and engine, damaging the turbocharger and engine.
8) The bypass valve actuator assembly pressure setting and calibration are performed on a special setting/inspection agency, and customers and other personnel cannot change it at will.
9) Since the turbocharger turbine wheel has a high precision and the working environment requirements during maintenance and installation are very strict, the turbocharger should be repaired at a designated maintenance station when it fails or is damaged.
In short, users must strictly follow the requirements of the instruction manual to perform correct operations, maximize the three major functions of lubricating oil (lubrication, decontamination, and cooling), and try to avoid man-made and unnecessary failures that may damage and scrap the turbocharger, thereby ensuring the turbocharger’s proper service life.
