It’s the annual Easter Day again! Easter Day is the second most important festival of the Christian year after Christmas. And this year it will be held on April 9th, only 5 days left!
Easter, also called Pascha (Latin) or Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian festival and cultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD. According to the three Synoptic Gospels, Jesus gave the Passover meal a new meaning, as in the upper room during the Last Supper he prepared himself and his disciples for his death. Jesus told his disciples that bread symbolized his body, wine symbolized his blood, and he would atone for people’s sins with death. Jesus Christ was resurrected on the third day after being crucified, and Paul associated the resurrected Christ with the Passover because Jesus was sacrificed to save his people.
The origin of Easter can be traced back to the ancient Jewish religious festival, Passover, which is held during the vernal equinox every year to commemorate the liberation of Jews from Egypt led by God. In the early days of Christianity, Passover also became a time for Christians to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. However, with the development of the times, this festival is no longer limited to the religious category, but gradually has the secular significance of symbolizing the arrival of spring, the revival of all things and the opening of a new life.
According to the papal calendar, the date of Easter should be the first Sunday after the full moon of the vernal equinox. Since the date of the vernal equinox is not fixed, but fluctuates with the time of year, the date of Easter changes accordingly from year to year. Since the day is longer and the night is shorter after the vernal equinox, the full moon means that the light shines in the midst of the darkness. Sunday, on the other hand, is the first day of the week in the Jewish calendar, the day of Jesus’ resurrection as recorded in the Bible, representing the beginning of a new creation, and therefore has a special meaning for Christianity. In addition, the date of Easter is also influenced by some religious and cultural customs. Although they all belong to Christianity, the Orthodox Church and the Western Church have different calculation methods, so the date of Easter may also be different. The Orthodox Church usually uses the Julian calendar.
In Christianity, colored eggs symbolize the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, just as birds hatch from their eggs. So on the eve of Easter, Christians paint eggs in bright colors to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection and give these eggs as gifts to family and friends.
In most countries eggs are dyed with common vegetable dyes. Traditionally in parts of Eastern Europe, wax or twine are used to create intricate designs on eggs before they are painted. These special eggs, known as Pysanki, are kept like heirlooms year after year. In Germany and some other countries, eggs are cut out with holes so that they can be hung on bushes and trees during Easter, like Christmas trees. Among Orthodox Christians, people present crimson eggs to each other to commemorate the blood of Christ.
Easter Bunny is also one of the symbols of Easter Day, because rabbits reproduce very quickly in spring, which symbolizes the beginning of spring and the birth of new life, so it becomes a symbol of Easter. There is a legend that the Easter Bunny lays eggs and hides them in the grass and other things in the garden, so the adults would let the children go to the garden on Easter Sunday to look for the hidden eggs.
Lilies are indispensable flowers in Easter celebrations. Lilies have a unique beauty and fragrance that signify new life and hope. The white Lilium candidum signifies purity and is often seen in paintings alongside the Virgin Mary. In addition, in some legends, lilies are also associated with the death and resurrection of Jesus. Before Jesus died, the sweat from his prayer turned into white lilies, so lilies are used in Easter celebrations.
The way people celebrate Easter Day varies by region and culture, but most of them include attending church services, hunting eggs, eating Easter meals, giving gifts to each other and other celebrations. Festivals are an important part of Western culture. We can better understand Western culture by understanding the origin of festivals and the way of celebrating festivals. I hope you all have a wonderful Easter Day!
