We all know that a turbocharger consists of turbine housing and the compressor housing. If you look closely, you will find that they are in two different colors. As two parts of a system, why do they have two different colors?
The difference in color between the turbine housing and the compressor housing in a turbocharger is a result of several factors related to their materials, and operating conditions.
The turbine housing, often referred to as the "hot side," is exposed to extremely high temperatures due to its direct contact with exhaust gases. These gases can reach temperatures exceeding 600°C , necessitating the use of heat-resistant materials such as the cast iron or nickel-based alloys. Over time, the intense heat causes oxidation and discoloration, often giving the turbine housing a dark, burnt, or rusty appearance. In contrast, compressor housing, known as the "cold side," handles compressed air at much lower temperatures. Typically made from lighter materials like aluminum, it remains relatively unaffected by heat-induced discoloration, retaining a cleaner, metallic finish.
Additionally, the two housings may undergo different surface treatments to enhance their durability and performance. The turbine housing might be coated with heat-resistant finishes to withstand thermal stress, while the compressor housing could be treated with anti-corrosion coatings to protect against moisture and environmental factors. These treatments further effect to the color distinction between the two components.
Surprisingly, the difference in color is not only a visual distinction, but also helps with assembly. Technicians and engineers can easily identify and differentiate between the two housings during assembly, maintenance, or repair, ensuring proper handling and installation.
