There are two main types: parallel twin-turbo and sequential twin-turbo. In a parallel setup, two turbochargers of the same size work simultaneously, each handling half of the engine's cylinders. This design is often used in V6 or V8 engines, reducing the load on each turbo and improving response speed.

Sequential twin-turbo systems reduce turbo lag by directing exhaust gas to one smaller turbo at low engine speeds, while the second larger turbo remains idle. When exhaust flow increases, the second turbo intervenes to reach maximum boost pressure through a bypass valve controlled by the engine management system.

Twin-turbochargers are widely used in high-performance cars, luxury vehicles, and diesel engines. Examples include BMW M series, Porsche 911 Turbo, and Mercedes-AMG models. These systems work particularly well in multi-cylinder engines where they can distribute the workload more efficiently.
